New Fypon Products at the 2011 Remodeling Show
0The Extreme How-To staff spent a few days in Chicago, Illinois, in October to attend the 2011 Remodeling Show. The convention brings together the entire remodeling industry face-to-face annually. Launched in 1991 by National Association of Home Builders, the event has expanded to represent all facets of the remodeling community — kitchen and bath; home improvement; aging-in-place; sustainable remodeling and more.
While at the show we stopped by the Fypon exhibition booth to get a close look at the company’s new product line. We love Fypon’s new Stone & Timber collection of decorative products, created to accent homes featuring stone, stucco and timber as major design themes. These durable new trim pieces feature either a realistic stone or woodgrain texture on all exposed surfaces. The Stone & Timber product offering includes window and door trim, decorative millwork, louvers, post wraps, trellis systems, stone surround systems, stone columns and stone balustrade systems. Each piece features rich, authentic textures and details to resemble traditional cast concrete or timber accents. Like all Fypon urethane pieces, they resist moisture, insect infestations, warping, cracking and splitting. Plus, they’re lightweight and easy to install, making them a cost-effective alternative to real wood or cast concrete products. Imagine constructing a woodgrain trellis without having to deal with the massive weight of the timber or the inherent manitenance issues that come with real wood. Similarly, urethane products make creating a stone-texture archway or door surround a project even a do-it-yourselfer can accomplish. For more info, visit www.fypon.com.
Create Custom Baseboards from PVC

Bathrooms, porches and patio areas that are prone to wet conditions can pose problems for wooden base moulding. As the wood contacts water, it can swell, cause paint to peel, deform or even rot. PVC, on the other hand, has none of those problems when exposed to water, which makes it an excellent material for base moulding in moisture-prone living areas. Fypon offers 3/4″ PVC stock that can easily be shaped with a router to any profile your desire. The Extreme How-To staff (more…)
Quick Tips for Fypon Trim
0- Remember that urethane and PVC trim products react differently to paint. Urethane trim pieces from Fypon are pre-primed at the factory and readily accept paint in any color. PVC, on the other hand, is a thermoplastic polymer, so those products work best with light paint colors, or paint with a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 54% or higher. There are many specially formulated paint systems that allow dark paint colors to be applied to PVC with low heat absorption. (more…)
Pro Tip for New Window
0
In Extreme How-To’s June 2011 issue, contributing writer, Mark Clement, explains his method for replacing windows in thick, plaster walls:
“Often when I remove plaster from a room, I’m also replacing the old windows. The overall thickness of plaster walls changes from the original wall thickness. In cases such as kitchens, where I want the window sills as deep as possible, I find it’s best to craft what I call a ‘sleeve’ that fits into the rough-opening and into which the new window fits. (It should go without saying that I map all this out before I take the plaster down and order the windows.) A sleeve is basically a 1-by box, in this case made from 1-by-12 Fypon PVC moulding. It does the double duty of weathering exterior conditions and also takes paint beautifully inside.”

How to Install Synthetic Dentil Moulding

Extreme How-To offers a step-by-step guide to installing urethane crown moulding from Fypon.
“Dentil moulding can make your millwork smile. Like a row of perfectly spaced pearly whites, dentil moulding is a series of repeating rectangular blocks that adds depth and character to millwork such as fascia trim and crown profiles.”
